Peranakan Breeze

As you turn into the Lorong Abu Siti Lane from Macalister Rd, keep to your left as you will the find the eye-catching signboard of Nyonya Breeze in striking GREEN color. Welcome to the taste of the Peranakan. Before we enter the world of Peranakan, let’s stroll down the memory lane where before everything begins. The King of the China had sent over his beloved princess of Hang Li Po to Straits of Melaka in order to be wed to the Sultan of Melaka. Due to Princes Hang Li Po was the royalty blood, she had took with her the practice and the traditional of the Chinese when married to this Sultan Melaka. Thanks for the combination and now we have the ethnic of Baba and Nyonya, a.k.a Peranakan.

Yaya, I knew I should cut the story short. I just wanna share some background before we get to know some signature dishes of Baba and Nyonya.
Well, let’s get started then..

We can see that this restaurant owner was somehow the Home-alike-boy. I guess his grandma recipe and really proud to be inherited as the blood of the Baba and Nyonya. As you can see, there’s a lot of pictures and stories hung consequently on each wall. And I can see that a few magazine and newspaper had written about this restaurant as I can see some articles too were hung on the wall accordingly.

We were greeted well by the staff there and he even recommends some dishes to us.
And here comes the drinks
Freshly crushed nutmeg with honey
This drink really brings out the flavor of ginger brewed with some palm sugar. Good for those to get rid of the ‘wind’ beneath their tummy… Ginger Tea

And this is the appetizer, Satay Bohong. Bits of chicken were skewered in the sticks and barbequed with charcoal. Thick satay sauce made of coconut gravy and spices were coated all over the satay while B-B-Q for pur-fect… Do remember to pop in the chunks of the cucumber as well as the sliced of onions too… Here’s the real signature dish of Baba and Nyonya, the Perut ikan. Perut ikan or the so called the fish stomach, these bellies were shredded finely with other fragrant leaves, such as the kafir leaves, daun katok, daun cekur, turmeric leaves and etc. Stewed in some prawns, chuncky pineapples, brinjals, long beans and etc. These were then cooked in the heavy herbs and spices.
Caution: This DISH do make you end up with a few bowl of rice. However, I guess this dish serves even better if this was served more piping HOT.

Next, this was HIGHLY recommended Sambal Prawn by the staff there. This dish was not the typical sambal we used to have. Normally, the sambal dish is cooked in heavy crushed chilies and spices. This one was cooked and stewed in heavy coconut gravy and some cubed brinjals and chilies. When the vegetable were soften, garnished some cashew nut and fried onions, and it is ready to be served. This is another signature dish of the Peranakan. Cubes of mengkuang, carrot, mushroom bits, cabbage and chopped pork were stir fried and layered on the popia skin. Then, deep fried the popia for the crunch within.
There’s a special sauce for this, some vinegar, soy sauce, crushed garlic and onion. Ohhhh

This another must-try dish for Nyonya Breeze. Otak-Otak. This is the egg mixture with cooked with spices and daun katok. In the center of the Otak-otak, you will find the whitish chunks of fish fillet arranged beneath the egg mixture. This dish was then steamed until cooked.Overall, this placed definitely carried the Nyonya breeze with them. Anyway, a little bit HEAT on the dish will absolutely brings out the flavor of ALL the dish.

Crushed On U-Soya

12-Apr ~ This round we resolute to have ease sweet tooth at this soya bean house. Situated just right at the 1st floor of the Pekaka Square, where Maxim Dim Sum is just at the corner. Set with some basic table and some ‘rattan’ chair, this shop is easily located. Over here, you can’t find any fancy portrayal nor do any exclusive accessories hang on the wall. But you can see huge poster of telling you about the goodies of how soy’s can offer to you.Something fascinated my eyes were this poster: We only served Pure Soya Bean Milk freshly grinded from Canadian Class A (non genetically modified beans (non GMO)
Sound cool…

The menu does have all sorts of soy’s goodies. For those who had a sweet tooth like me, you can opt for the classic To Fu Fah a.k.a bean curd, where serving the bean curd with syrup made from white sugar or ‘gula melaka’ (Gula Melaka is what we called where the syrup made from coconut milk). There were also some bean curds served with unique toppings like red bean paste, almond paste, chocolate chips and etc. Don’t be surprised if you found some savory bean curd as well. We decided to try on the red bean paste Toh Fu Fah, the Shanghai Salted Toh Fu Fah and also the Orange Soya Ice blended..That’s where this came from: Crushed n U-Soya… LOL

Here comes the Shanghai Salted Toh Fu Fah. This is my 1st time trying this savory dish of Toh Fu Fah. This bowl of Toh Fu Fah was served with some homemade soy sauce and garnished with some deep fried garlic and some dried little prawns. These buddies create a remarkable of strong taste for the Toh Fu Fah. And the bean curd was so amazingly smooth and it just melted in your mouth…Then was this Red Bean Paste Bean curd. This is served with red bean paste, where you can have double pleasure of the bean curd as well as the red bean.
Nice.
I was not daring enough to try on the Chocolate chips bean curd. Do share with me if you happen to taste that.

Lastly, was Orange Soya Ice blended. Soy drinks were crushed with the ice and also to add the kick for the drink, they have added some fresh orange as well. At 1st taste, the feeling was like chewing the ‘Sugus’ when I was a kid back then. But as the 2nd and 3rd sips takes place, the taste for both orange and the soy’s matches out perfectly..As a whole, this is must-visit-place as they claimed ‘We only served Pure Soya Bean Milk freshly grinded from Canadian Class A (non genetically modified beans (non GMO)’
…hhahahhaa…
In fact, forget about those wordings, it is still worth the visit for the yum yum soy’s discovery.

Happy Burfday Pap.. You are Still the Man for Me

Today I wanna do something special instead of writing for FOOD. FOOD has been the BEST thing for me so far, and yet there's another NEXT BEST thing as well..

Dearest Pap;
Today is the very extraordinary date for you and for me. For you: Happy Birthday to you Pap!! Hope you enjoy this very special day wherever you are!! For me; finally I have able to pull together bits of my guts to pen down this little note for you.

It had been four long years since I gathered enough of this courage in order to drop this letter to your ends. At first I was terrified about the idea as I do not know if I am able to so…because I am so afraid that I will end up flooding my pillow and my bed instead. But I knew… I just got to do it now…

And all about my dad's...just keep on flashing on my mind…
Standing at almost 6ft tall, he always walks tall and never feels humiliated of his big-fat-belly.
He used to joke that that's called a man's arrogance…
And we always laughed at him… because he looks so much like bearing another brother for us…

My dad was a neat person. He will always make sure his attire is well-dressed. And he will usually match with a belt and a pair of nicely ironed trouser...Thanks to my mum for that...
A short pant is only meant for inside the house.
And the hair is neatly comb to the back...If he was in the house...you can see him showing off his so called 'pride'...with a pair of shorts...
Lying comfortably and lazily on the armed chair… that's his favorite place. To read his unfinished paper. To watch some combat movie. And most of all to steal some refreshing nap...
Something about my dad that is so remarkably unforgettable..
His smile….Although he was smiling, and yet he will not showed his big grin. Somehow apart from him, he will still kept his look of a Dad!!
I am afraid that all dad will have that thinking...to protect their 'look of a father'..
But when he smiled, his dimple was deep enough that you can actually notice it from afar....

Not like other dad... my dad never really pampered us like the spoiled child. No toys unless for certain reason. No extra pocket money. And no going out late.
My dad's rules are the only rules that played in my family. If he said no, and that's NO. And that will be the final bargain...and no point for us hovering around and asking for second consideration... I used to be so envy of my little friends. They are so close to their dad's and some even like buddies of the life time. Some of them will be riding on their dad's back for a quick piggy ride. And the dad will eventually be the 'cow'. Sometimes, you also can see most of the dad's will scoop up their child lovingly when they are crossing the busy road.
And my dad?? All I have got is the stern face..

As much as I could recall, my dad never holds our hands when crossed the road.
Sometimes only he will held my mummy's hand...and we will be tagging along my mum's dress..
Looking up high and feeling envy of others kiddo looking at us beneath their dad's shoulder…
The stern face always seems to be with us wherever and whatever we do..
Still remember when I failed my Math's. It was bad and even myself couldn't accept it..
And I have faced the music terribly..and my tears just couldn't stop flowing..
And since that incident, I was not allowed to watch any TV since then..

As I grew older, I always wonder what is behind my dad stern look…

One thing for sure, he loves my mum a lot…
Look at the picture and it means a thousand words….
LOL As times flew by, and getting older, the real picture of my dad was getting crystal clear..
We began to realize the charm of my dad from the little things that he had did for us was indeed the BIG thing we ever have…

My dad had always be the hero of our house..
Most of the furniture in my house were made by my dad..
The cupboard; which kept all of our belongings and clothes. The kitchen cabinet; where my Mummy will eventually cook all the yummy delicacies for all of us. And not forgetting the writing table…where my Daddy made just for the 3 of us, where we were striving so hard to finish our never ending homework. And of course, the beautiful dining table which gathered all of us for the dinner. Yup, ALL of the furniture was hand made and signed with love by my Dad…
Dad loves to takes us around. Life was hard as Pap was the only working man in the family… As a carpenter with limited wages, Pap make sure four of our siblings gets the most of him. His money, his time and his love. Even though time was hard, but he always makes sure that he spent some of the hard-earned money to take us for a short holiday though. Ooopss… shamed of me!!

I still remember there's a time where we saw a picture, where a small room can fit into
3 beautiful beds lovingly..
In a family of 3 bubbly daughters, my younger sister and I always end up slept on the floor...as 3 of us is sharing one tiny bedroom where it only feed a single bed. The next few week, my dad had managed to build 3 little comfortable beds for his 3 little princess, exactly like the picture we saw.. my sister and I were so excited for having our very first bed.. And whenever the house faces any breakouts, like changing the over-heated light bulb, fixing the dripping pipe, painting the old walls and repairing the cracking doors as well as adding the oil to the fan that make the furious noise, all these were never a problem to my dad
Who needs a plumber or an electrician when you have ONE MIRACLE DAD in the house??Another incident that touched my heart till now. Still remember it was my departure day to Sabah to further my studies. I called it a TEARY day. Some of my relatives, my ever-best friends and of course my beloved family were there to sent me off to the plane. Mummy was crying so hard, that I barely can see her eyes. For mummy, I am always the baby of the family. Mum keeps on reminding me to really take care of myself. Don’t’ do this… Remember to do that… Don’t you forget to….bla bla bla… and of course with tears choking her eyes and her throat.

But Pap, he just stood there without a word. How could you Dad?? Is there no love for me at all?? Is it I am not worth for any concern at all?? My tears were flowing uncontrollably as well…having a thought that Pap does not care about me anymore??

It hurt even more when Pap tries to stop mum from talking to me. He just said, “Come on, just let her go it’s time now..or else the plane will take off!!”
He dragged my mum to aside while signaling me to be off by now…
With tears in my face, I wish I could ask my Dad about this: “Dad, is it I am so not worth for your care and attention?? I knew I am not your favorite child… I am not as smart as Sis, and I am not as adorable as Fong, but I am still your daughter, Dad!! How could you??”

“Just GO!!”Dad still yelling…

As I turned around to have one last glance of my beloved friends and families, I saw something that I was not believed as well even though with my own eyes! This is not TRUE…

It was the tear of my beloved Pap. Pap was eventually shedding tears for this little black sheep of the family. His voice still trembling from within. And the tears just won’t stop!!I was shocked. Really shocked!! Pap was eventually trying to be strong in order for me to make tracks with peace. He knew I have to pursue my studies. He does not want to weight me down with more moans and heartbreaking moment.

Suddenly I found the long lost courage. I knew I have to be brave. Just as what Pap wants me to be!!

It was eventually the love that he showered to us all this while!!
The sweat that make the furniture in order for us to sleep soundly. The generosity that takes us to have all those remarkable holiday.

The ability to mend the broken gadgets just to ensure us to have a GREAT home. And of course, not forgetting the act of a father for his daughter to have enough of courage to leave her little home behind for studies…

Unfortunately, Pap, you were not here anymore in order for me to said thank you for the unconditionally love you showed to us all this while… but I really want you to know about this

Pap: Thank you for believing me… thank you for letting me knew that Dad’s love was not only meant for a piggy ride nor a loving face. We all missed you Dad… I did not dream of you anymore recently. Is it that you have long forgetting about us??

I knew you will not Pap, not even for a while. As you always tell us, we are the BEST asset you ever have. And I still believe that!P/s: I love You, Pap. Now. And forever.
I knew you can hear us from above. Shined on us. Just stay close with us ya…

Just a little song that I would like you to dedicated to you up there:
Sorry I never told you
All I wanted to say…
Now it's too late to hold you
'Cause you've flown away…
So far away…

Never had I imagined Living without your smile…
Feeling and knowing you hear me
It keeps me alive...
And I know you're shining down on me from heaven
Like so many friends we've lost along the way
And I know eventually we'll be together
One sweet day…Darling I never showed you…
Assumed you'd always be there
I took your presence for granted
But I always cared...
And I miss the love we shared And I know you're shining down on me from heaven
Like so many friends we've lost along the way
And I know eventually we'll be together
One sweet day…Although the sun will shine the same I'll always look to a brighter day…Lord I know when I lay me down to sleep…
You will always listen as I pray…And I know you're shining down on me from heaven
Like so many friends we've lost along the way…
And I know eventually we'll be together
One sweet day…

And I know you're shining down on me from heaven
Like so many friends we've lost along the way
And I know eventually we'll be together
One sweet day…

Sorry I never told you
All I wanted to say…

Kisses and hugs??

25-Mar~ What does OXO mean for you?? I still remember the movie by Jack Black in Nachos Libre (not sure if the title of the movie is correct or not…forgive me if I am wrong…hehehe) this movie was about this pastor where he desperately dream to become the well recognized wrestler in Mexico. Jack Black was so damn hilarious with his Mexican argot, and his big belly as well. It was a scene where he tried to show his love to another nun, the note was so cute where he used the icon to show the kisses and hugs. Kisses was put as ‘X’ and hugs as ‘O’ icon.

Ok..back to the topic. When I was 1st get to know this restaurant, it eventually brought me back to this movie….and here we are… OXO…

This most up-to-date hang out place was designed in a trendy way. They used the color of black and white. Lighten up with the crystal lamps really give a stylish look. The restaurant was indeed very generous as we can see that all of the guest for that night was given a butter roll served on the house. We have ordered this Emperor Prawns and Grilled Fish fillet serve up with Orange butter sauce. Comes with a salad and a Cordial drink, only cost RM16.4
Here’s the salad, the Norwegian Smoke Salmon with mixed salad. The smoked salmon was salty enough and mixed with the garden salad and served with thousand island sauce. And here’s the soursop cordial drink. And here’s the main dish. The prawn was swathed in a popia skin and deep fried. Then was this grilled fish. I could taste a dash of turmeric powder. As the side dish, was this boiled potato with some olive oil and also some boiled vege like the broccoli, carrot and cauliflower. The special of this dish was the sauce itself. It was this butter cooked with some orange squash. Nice!!
Then was this kiddy meal that caught my attention. I thought it was meant for the kids, and when asked if we can ordered them or not, the waitress just grin to us….and said YES!!
Today’s my lucky day I guess!! LOL
It was this Kidman Style mini Chicken burger. The chef arranged the double decker of the meat paste and served with cheese, mayo and some green vege. The side dish was this fried wedges and a bunch of green salad.
Nice for little kid and also nice for big kid like me…LOL… this dish is RM7.8
Hahahaha

The dish served was rather diminutive; hence we opt for another Great Grandma Recipe of Tomato Soup. Tomatoes were blended finely and cooked with herbs. Then this soup was garnished with some croutons of bread. The price is RM7.9.As a surprise, this restaurant too has some live music where the boy and the gal was singing beautifully and joking endlessly. The singer was so sweet, where he dedicated this Cantonese song sing by Ah Niu – Chi Lam Cheng ko…
Speechless….
So Sweet.. Awwwhhhhh....
And guess what for dessert?? We have 3 minitiature of desserts: The Cookie, The Cake and The Watermelon....
As a whole, this restaurant provide classy and modish atmosphere where we can chit chat with our buddies while enjoying the foodies. The foodies I found the portion were indeed small. .
But if you are looking for a cozy place for a drink with the friends, this can be the place!!

Kong Xi Kong Xi to 妈咪

3-Mar~ That day was my mum big day….the actual day was actually on 24-Mar, but today indeed was my mum’s Chinese birthday..

My mum’s favorite, Starview Restaurant. This good-old-restaurant used to be situated right just opposite the Telekom at Jalan Burmah. But right now, it had been moved to a better place. Situated right in the heart of the newly open New World Park. And here we are, ordered some of the signature dish as well as my mum’s favorite dish.

Here you go. Bon Appetite!!

The first dish to serve was this Mantau with Lotus paste a.k.a Sau Pau. Sau Pau is normally served during ones birthday. Back in those days, this dish brings affluent and long life for that particular person. It was made similar like the peach where Chinese believed only served for angels and goddess. Inside this fluffy Pau, you will find some rich and semi sweet lotus paste. Yum!!Then was this Golden Sharkfin. I guess that’s not much to explain as if you have gone through my previous blog you will indeed get a hint on what and how to make this delicious dish. All in all, Starview still beat the rest and served one of the BEST Sharkfin..LOL Next was this 5 Happiness. It was a typical Chinese starter where it was a plate of 5 combination of cold and hot side dishes. Well, let’s start from the left from clockwise. It was this Fried Mantis with Dried Chili. Smells and taste just as good as it looks!! Next, was this Deep Fried Fish cake with prawn. The fish paste was blended finely and added some chopped spring onion and prawn, then it was deep fried. Then, it was this Yam Ball. Chargrilled BBQ Chicken or better known as Char Siew were wrapped in this pastry made of Yam, and deep fried to conserve the crunchiness. The dish far behind was another signature dish of Starview, the Stir Fried Egg with Sharkfin. Chinese called this as Kwai Fa Chi. Kwai Fa was referring to this a type of flower. In the center of the plate was the cold dish, the Salad made of tomatoes and some leafy vege served with loads of Thousand Island sauce. We were then served this simple dish of the vege. The Siu Pak Choy was cook tenderly with some chicken stock. To boost the flavor they put in some salted egg to make a beautiful finishing of the dish.Next, was this, which I claimed interesting dish. Have you ever tried before the Peking duck?? Well, the conventional way was to wrap the popia skin with the finely sliced of the skin of the peking duck. Put in some cucumber stick and some spring onion and dipped with the special prepared sweet sauce. What happen to the meat then?? Normally, the chief will stir fried them with black pepper sauce. This restaurant was way too creative where they combined the western and the oriental serving of the duck. Over here, instead of popia skin, they served Mantau as the replacement. Instead of skin, they sliced thinly the skin and also the meat itself. Put on the crispy skin with some cucumber slices and spring onion, and then spread the mantau with some sweet sauce. The feeling was awesome as it was fluffy on the outside and springy on the inside. On the center of the plate, you can see how interesting the chef prepared the meat of the duck. They shredded the meat and mixed with some sweet and sour chili sauce. These mixtures were then put on the pie tie. It was the meaty feeling that makes you fall in love with this dish!!Then was this steamed Cod Fish. The fish meat was fresh and it tastes yummy too!! During birthday, not only they need Sau Pau but also this Longevity Noodles that hopes to bring long life for the particular person. This noodle was stir fried with lots of bean sprouts and some prawns and garnished with some egg. Surprisingly, this noodle was not oily at all!!Last was this White Fungus with Longan and sweet dates.Nevertheless, eating out at Starview never failed us!! If you looking some fine cooking of Chinese food, do drop by and taste them yourself.
Just don’t forget the Peking duck!! Finger licking good… LOL
