Eating Out In Hong Kong

29-Aug-08 till 3-Sep
This had been the 2nd trip to distant country this year. After the daring trip to Bali, where I need to trudge up & down, this round I stepped my foot in this ever-dream of country…
HONG KONG

When I used to be a small gal, my mum have always showed interest to the so-called Hong Kong movie, me too, just can’t help bringing over my small chair and joined my mum and watched with a glee…

I just fell in love with Hong Kong, instantly. The food, the people, the culture & the of coz the place itself. All the name of the places, Tsim Tsa Tsui, Wongkok, Causeway Bay and lots and lots of it…

Well, let’s cut the crap as this about the yummy food I have taste before in HK.
After all..this is what this blog is about…

Hahhahaa..this was my very 1st time sinking my teeth in this so-called ‘smelly beancurd’…eventually, it does not stink at all..
No doubt there’s a strong heady scent of this beancurd, but it was REALLY not foul at all… Too bad that my hubby thinks it smells like some filthy socks...
First, this beancurd was stored in a huge jar made of clay. When it was moldy enough, that’s when the smells came…
Next, the tofu was then deep fried in a wok of HOT oil…
It was not set to serve up yet, until you put lots of sweet paste & some unique made chili sauce Both sauce combined will bring a strong UMMPPPHH…

Now we scrolled to some daily dish that Hongkies have regularly…
The most talk about is this Ku Lo Yuk, Sweet & Sour Pork Rib. The pork ribs were chopped into bit size. After deep fried, these pork ribs were stirred fried in rich tomato paste. The tangy flavour of the dish will definitely make chompped down additional spoons of rice….

This is another common dish where you will always see in the Hong Kong drama series. Eggs were beaten smoothly & stirred fried with some shredded onions & prawn. Sometimes, they put some beansprout too in order to enhance the crunchiness within.

Fried Cheong Fun ~ Fried Rice Flour Rolls
For supper, we have a stroll in this hectic street of Hong Kong.

Eventhough, the night falls, but the city never sleeps…As we walked, we managed to find this Fried Rice Flour Rolls (Fried Cheung Fun). Per plate is HK15 (about RM7++), you will have 4 rolls of remarkably BIG cheung fun…
First, they sliced the rolls into a few piece.

Then, they gradually grilled them over a moderate fire. When the cheung fun turned into golden brown, they popped down an egg & started to sauté the egg & the rice rolls. Lastly, they put some sweet soya sauce & a few drops of chili sauce…
Look at those pictures….ain’t they loook good?? Hehehe...

Table of supper
From left: Hello Kitty Instant Cooked Noodles. This is normal cup of instant noodle. The special part of this was the fishball itself look alike kitty cats….look below...Next, was the bowl of sharkfin. Those were the so-called sharkfin but the taste is just as good as like the real 1. Then, was the sticky rice with soya bean. The sticky rice was stuffed with some salty shredded pork. Last, was the ‘Ding Ding Dim Sum’, where I have them cooked instantly @ 7-11……I called it 'Ding Ding Dim' Sum as this was 'Ding' from oven... :)

Dim Sum
Hongkies loved to take pleasure in their tea with some Dim Sum for breakfast. When we arrived, there were already jam-packed with people. Here is some lovely Dim Sum which I think is not bad….

These were called Ham Sui Kok. The paste was from glutinous rice flour. Inside, they load some conserved turnip (choy po) & some preserved vegetable, which we called it 'tong choy', some shredded meats & finely wedged mushroom, then they were deep fried and all set to be serve like that...

Next, we heads to Disneyland.....my wonderland :)
Disneyland Chicken Pie
This pie cost about HK25 (about RM12++)…I knew it was damn expensive, but I just can’t help it to buy this cute little pie in Disneyland…
The result, not as good as I expected….the crust itself was very milky & the usual ingredients like bit sized chicken, cubed onions & some carrot & green beans…
Just can’t beat our most favorite, chicken pie from Bukit Bendera. (hehheee..i shall put this into blog the next time I purchased the chicken pie from there…
Deep fried Pigeon

Pigeons were cleaned & deep fried in the hot oil. The taste is comparable to our baby chicken where you can try them @ Butterworth... hahhaha..next time too I will let you know where...

Another lunch in Hong Kong ~ Causeway Bay
This shop really takes my sweat & effort to ask around…I really thought I was not bad at all as I have not in HK but managed to find so many beautiful delicacies there...

We have this Teng Chai Chuk a.k.a Broth of the Boat
This broth cost about HK32 (RM16)…we called them ‘Chuk’ in Cantonese. Talking about broth, if it is not as smooth as the silk..you just can’t call it broth. Chinese broth needs the taste as well as the velvetiness...

Just look at the picture, will be more than I can say… They eventually simmer the broth in more than 10hours..just to make sure they have the quality of the broth..

Another specials of that restaurant is the Fried Hor Fun with Shredded Chicken
Using dark soy sauce & fried the meat with the ‘hor fun’, a type of flat rice flours rolls, this will give a hint of sweety taste. To fry this evenly, you will need to control the temperature & the ingredients of coz…

And here’s some lovely dessert I had in HK..
This is called the Mango Dessert with Glutinous Rice balls
They used pure mango puree & also not forgetting the chunks of mangoes. The mango puree & the chunks really dissolve in your mouth…
On top of it, they put a large scoop of mango ice cream :)
Phewwww….this might be BEST mango Dessert I ever had....And I am going to miss that…sob**sob…
For my mum & sis, they had ordered this coconut juice with bird nest. This is about HK45 (RM22++). The coconut milk was undeniably very strong & when pooled with the bird nest, you can feel a sudden urge to continue to slurp up that dessert...

Then, it was this Glutinous Rice pudding. I don’t really like pudding as I am really scared of the milky feeling. But this pudding does not have that strong accent.
Together with the bits of
glutinous rice , it just taste awesome...

Taufu Fah...Locals like it so much, hence we decided to give it a try...and we ended to round the whole Wongkok just to find this so-called Soy Beancurd...and it really worth the effort & also the sweats..Phewww... This beancurd is very much different from our locals as they only have them in white syrup..if you savour for more sugary taste, you can served yourself by adding more brown sugars on it... The smoothiness really can't beat those here in Penang...Fast Food @ HK
McD in Tsim Sa Tsui
While waiting for the show in Avenue of Star, we went to this McD nearby. And this looks-good chicken wing, catched our eyes
The crispiness of the wings, really finger licking good. To have more UMMPHH….they put some dash of red pepper....Wow....

A closer look at the Yum yum chicken wings... :)

Our Diner a.k.a hawker food

Savoury Mix Rice Ball
We saw this so-called rice stall in the nearby LRT station. They have all sorts of rice, white rice, brown rice, 5 mix-type-of –grains, and more…. Somehow, we could choose our favorite side dish in order to wrap up in the rice.

We decided to have the 5 mix-type-of –grains, with teriyaki chicken, seaweed & peanuts…Put in all together…you will have a a more than excellent meal… only HK16 (RM8+)

Fish Paste in Thick soup with Vege
I remember I saw this dish before in 1 of the HK TVB drama… We were so excited when we found it…
Thank God… At 1st….the aunty cooked some fish paste & also some green vege…
Finally, aunty gives a touch of sesame oil & soy sauce, on the soup…
And…Ta-daaaa… here you go the Yum yum fish paste soup….
Advise: To be taken in HOT…

As dessert we have this lovely Wun Chai ko, a.k.a Cake in the Bowl, made of glutionous rice flour & lots of sugar of coz. On it, were some red beans to add to the flavors...
Peng Tong Wu Lo ~ Haw fruit In Melted Rock Sugar
To be exact, I tried in in Shenzen, and not Hong Kong...But I just can't help myself to mention about this to you guys...Over here in Penang, I have tried the so-called Ping Tong Wu Lo. Normally, they used fresh fruits like strawberry, grapes & tomatoes & dished into this pot of melted rock sugars… but here in Shenzen, this is the real Ping Tong Wu Lo. They used fresh haw fruits with the seeds removed. Then these juicy haws were then jab into a stick where they enfold the haws with the thick syrup
I feel like heaven…..

Here goes my little experience eating out @ Hong Kong

Stay tune for more goodies ahead :)

Cheers
