Tittle-tattling on my ever-beloved (Part I)

I have always dream of to share some of my ever-favorite lovers in my lovely hometown… Ladies and gentlemens, present the hawker foodies in Penang…

Penang is still known as the Food Paradise in Malaysia where you can find lots of affordable and double thumbs up foodies….as far as I knew… LOL
Well, affordable is where the range of RM1.2 till RM15….is that acceptable??
Double thumbs up, I believe EVERYONE will stand by me for sure….
Right guys??

Let’s cut the crap and move on to some of my favorite Darlings in Penang…

1st to stop was the Kopitiam nearby Farlim. From Sunshine Farlim, go straight until the main traffic light. Turn to the right and on the 1st junction, turn to the left. Go straight. You will see the Anakku shop on your right. Go straight and follow the way where there’s a half roundabout and pls keep on going…. Until you reached the 1st junction on the left, turn into it. You will spot the Kedai Kopi Teoh Guan Hup on your left.

In this crowded neighborhood Kopitiam, the hawker food there’s really not bad at all, but my all-time-sweetheart will be the Chee Cheong Fun and Fried Bihun and Mee. And this is how it looks. This is vermicelli paste was made of rice and steamed for perfection. Then this cooked vermicelli paste will be rolled up and shapes like the colon-alike and this explained why it was called ‘Cheong Fun’. The secret recipe to the mouth-watering Chee Cheong Fun was in the sauce.
Over here, the sauce was specially made where they blended the shrimp paste and some sweet sauce and some peanut butter sauce, which makes this plate of Cheong Fun sooo marvelous… RM1.7 for 2pieces of Cheong Fun. This plate of Bihun was fried and I believe they do add some cubes of fried pork fats when into it. The pork fat really enhances the taste of the fried bihun… Yummy!! Only RM1.2 per plate.

The next to come was this Loh Mee in Perak Rd. See, the workers even have uniform to serve professionally…From Gelugor, go straight. You will passed through this Y-junction where on the left is to Jalan Perak. On the right is Jalan Jelutong. Take the turning to Jalan Perak. Go straight and keep to the left and and look carefully where you will see Joo Huat Kopitiam Loh Mee is a bowl of mihun and yellow mee with thick gravy served as the soup. The soups were stewed from chicken and thicken with some starch made of corn flour. To garnish, they served the mee with some slices of meat, halves of egos, and some stewed chicken feets. Add more chili paste and some onion paste and here goes the a good bowl of Loh Mee…Only RM2.3 per bowlIf you would like to have non-spicy food as breakfast to go, do drop by to this Wan Tan Mee at Chowrasta Market. RM2.5 for dried or soup version.

From Penang Road, you will pass by the traffic lights where on the right will be the Hutton Lane and on the left is the Lebuh Campell. Go straight whereon the next junction, turn to the left to Jalan Chowrasta where the Chowrasta Market was. From there, go straight and turn to the left T-junction. The Coffee shop is just on your right.

Wan Tan Mee is the noodle made of eggs. And this is the soupy version of Wan Tan Mee.
These noodles was cooked in the boiled water and put back on the big bowl of cold water to keep the springiness’ of the noodle. Then, the cooked noodles were served in the soup and some dumplings a.k.a Wan Tan. Wan Tan was the minced pork wrapped in the dumpling skin. Some sliced BBQ pork or Char Siew and some poached green vegetables were garnished on the serving of mee. My Mum’s favorite.

As for me, I always opt for my lovely darling of the dried version of the Wan Tan Mee. The same method of cooking the noodles, but instead of the soup, they mixed the noodles with some dark soya sauce, sesame oil some fried pork fats and tossed well. Same goes as the Wan Tan and the BBQ pork as the garnished buddies. YumYum…If you just can’t defy the bread and the butter in the morning, you may as well opt to Roti Bakar (toasted bread) where it was nearby the Chowrasta Market. From Penang Road, go straight till the traffic light as below in the picture. When you reached the traffic lights, turn into the Lebuh Campell. This Kopitiam is just on the left located on the small ‘lorong’.
Pic of map 4 – roti bakar They served excellent local Kopi Ais with the very ‘Kau’ feeling.Roti bakar was the bread toasted on the burning charcoal. They even hired a worker specially to take care of the bread…sorry guys…I was so fond of my darling until I forgotten to snap picture of that… they served the toasted bread by spreading with butter richly and sprinkle with some crystal sugar…Of course, the toasted bread is very deadly without the other darling….the half boiled eggs…
Remember, those two should always go hand-in-hand. Eggs were served half cooked. You should start by jabbing the egg yolks and egg white and mix well with lots of soy sauce and lots of pepper…
Wallaaaaahhhhhhhh…..If you can’t help it to have some rice in the morning, they do have some ready ready-packed Nasi Lemak, coconut rice with curry sambal and a fried fish wrapped in the banana leaf. So much about the breakfast and now we moving on with my others dearest for my lunch…
Located in the Batu Lancang Market, let’s have a look on how to get there..

From Jalan Masjid Negeri, where heading to Tesco, turn to the left into Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lin. You will see the Lam Wah Ee Hospital on your right. Go straight until you reach the junction, turn to the right into Lintang Batu Lancang. Go straight and turn to the left where you will see the Batu Lancang market.Over here in the market, you will find all sorts of goodies for snack or heavy meal as well. One of the favorite will be the Mee Goreng.Mee Goreng was the yellow noodles stirred fried in the Indian way. They used some sauce made from stewed squid. The put lots chili paste and other ingredient like the stewed squid, boiled potato, some taukua (beancurd) and some cucur (deep fried flour fritters). To garnish, they put some crushed peanut, some lettuce, some fried shallots and a half serving lime for the kick to go… RM2.7 per plate. The next darling will be this Pasembur or also known as Gado-Gado or Rojak. This pasembur is very much different with those served by the Malays. Over here, they add some Jelly fish on top for the extra crunchiness. As usual, they do have others ingredients like the poached potatoes, some shredded Mengkuang and cucumber, taukua, some cucur and also some crispy prawn fritters. These ingredients were served with some peanut gravy with some chili paste on it…

There’s some snack to goes too... There’s a stall selling all sorts of fried food such as mini curry puffs, mini bread with sardine and as well as this Kuih Kodok or better known Banana fritters. They smashed the ripped banana with some flour, and some shredded coconuts bits. Then, these mixtures were deep fried. My darling on the left is the Kuih Kodok. RM1 per stick.
Those left was the potato balls. They smashed the sweet potato with some flour and deep fried the potatoes balls. 20cents for each ball.

Then we moved on to the town, where we can find the Kway Teow Soup. From the famous signature of the temple of the Goddess of Kuan Yin, go straight and keep to the right. Turn to the right into Pitt Street where you will find the AIA center on your left. Go straight and turn to the left of the 1st junction into the King Street. There’s a kopitiam located just opposite to the Hwang DBS where they served yummy Kway Teow Soup.Kway Teow was the noodles made of rice flour as well. They do have other option such as the yellow noodles, the Lo Shu Fen or Mee Suah. My choice for that day was this Lo Shu Fen. These smooth Lo Shu Fen were cooked and served with the chicken soup. They garnished with some green lettuce, some fish ball, and some minced pork and of course some spring onion to tag along.
Hubby choice was this dried Kway Teow thng. Instead of soup, they mixed the yellow noodles with some dark soy sauce and some soy sauce. They served the mee with a bowl of fish ball soup. And now it’s time for some afternoon break. From Pragin Mall, heads straight where you will reach to the traffic lights. If you were to follow the traffic lights, it will leads you to this Jelutong Express Highway. Turn to the left into Carnavon Street and go straight. The Kedai Kopi Seng Thor is just next to the Lebuh Campell. Here’s where you will find the fried oyster. Firstly, poured the beaten eggs and some corn flour mixture onto the boiling pan. Add some chives and chili paste. When the mixture is almost done, put the oyster as they do not want to overcook the princess. The fried oyster was served with some special chili sauce made of chili, garlic and some vinegar. Price range from RM8-RM15Next, we head to the other side of Penang, Balik Pulau. From Relau, follow the path up to the hill. If go straight, you will be going to Paya Terubung. As you arrived at the junction, turn to the left into another series of hills before we can reach to Balik Pulau. Don’t forget to have a look at the surrounding and you will eventually overlook the dizziness. As you finish the curvy roads, you will reach the traffic lights… Turn into the right and you will find the new market of Balik Pulau. And here comes everybody's honey pie…. Laksa is our Penang signature dish. If you do not have them, then your journey is not completed. This thick vermicelli flour was served with spicy and sour soup. They used chunks of sardine fish as the soup base. Lastly, they garnished with some shredded onions, cucumber and pineapple and spoonful of shrimp paste.

For me, I prefer for Laksa Lemak. The same ingredients used, but the difference was they added a touch of coconut gravy for the double sensation.Balik Pulau is famous for its nutmeg. Over here, they blended the nutmeg in whole and served with crushed ice. And this is how nutmeg looks like...And here’s the nutmeg juice served with a sour plum.Over here, you can’t miss their Pasembur as well. The preparation and the ingredients are almost the same just that they mixed some peanut butter in the gravy.

~ TO BE CONTINUE ~

Tittle-tattling on my ever-beloved (Part II)

Sorry guys...i knew my drawing sucks.. I guess I will stick with eating then...
Let’s continue to savor our sweet tooth. From Jalan Mahsuri, you will reach to the traffic light where on your right is the Shell station. Turn to the left into Jalan Mayang Pasir where you will spot Sunshine Square Supermarket on your right. Go straight until you reached the 1st junction and turn into the right. Next, turn the left on the 1st junction where you will arrived the Bayan Baru market. Heads to the Bong Coffee Stall where they served excellent Red bean Ice (or I called it Ang To Ka). Uncle blended the ice with some cooked red beans and some syrup and with some fresh milk (which I will asked the uncle to skip them for me). Only RM1 and you will scream for enthusiasm…. Oh-My-Goshh!!If you used to have cakes or scones for tea time, you may find my others cutie darling as option for your tea break. Try this banana fritters, mung bean cake and Deep fried tee kuih (Tee Kuih is made of glutinous rice flour). Price range from 80cents to RM1.2Take the raod from Jalan Mashjid Negeri. When you reached the roundabout, you will see the Heng Ee High School on your right. Take the 3pm turning at the roundabout and into the Jalan Free School. On your right you will find lots of poster from Top Kids Nursery.
The uncle stall is just on your left…The Uncle claimed that he only used certain type of banana for this Goreng pisang. If he can’t find the so-called best banana, and that’s it where he will choose not to sell them at all. These bananas were coated in the batter and deep fried for twice in order to have the crisp within.
In the center was this mung beans cake. These mung beans were cooked and smashed and shape well before coated and deep fried as well. Lastly, was this Deep fried Tee Kuih. Uncle sliced the Tee Kuih and sandwiched them with a slice of yam and another side with a slice of sweet potato.

Then we move back to town for others charming sensation. From Penang road, just go straight and keep to the left. The 1st turning was to Jalan Chowrasta, 2nd turning was to Lebuh Tamil, the 3rd was heading to Jalan Kimberly and when you see Jalan Keng Kwee, turn to into it.
Beware that’s 2 stalls that served the so called best Chendul. Obviously, go to the stall where you can see crowds of people flocking in, which is on your right.Chendul is the dessert made of pandan Jelly (which I called it myself). Normally, chendul wil be served with crushed ice, some red beans and poured with thick gula Melaka and some coconut milk. Next, heads to the Jeti for more kick in the hot afternoon. From the Light Street, go straight until you reached the giant roundabout. Take the turning of the 12pm and turn into the Pangkalan Weld. Just go straight and watched for a van on the right. Like this…
Over here, they too served the Chendul and Ice kacang. But my most talk about sweetie pie is this Ai Yu Pin. Ai Yu Pin was originally from Taiwan where they served some jellies with crushed ice. Top with some lychee syrup and some squash of lemon juice…Only RM1.3
Woooooo….They too have this Green Grass juice. They blend the grass and served with spoons of syrups made of brown sugar and top with some crushed ice. Chinese believe that this will bring down the heat within the body…When night falls…my lovers never fails me as well…let’s scoop out some of my favorite’s…

Isn’t she is a beauty?? Curry Mee is the name…
To be frank with you, I have never really fancied her not until I tried on this.
She was from Raja Uda, Butterworth. Sorry there’s no map available, but according to my friend, it is very easy to be located. The soup was not very watery and was definitely cooked with loads of curry spices. They put lots of cubes of Taupok (medium hard bean curd), some long beans, and some clams. The special of the Curry mee was you must eat together with the special made curry stew with squids, mantis prawns and some cubes of wild boar meat… Trust me as you will not stop!!

Let’s move on to this...my all time favorite… Char Hor Fun, Hokkien Char & Loh Mee… sound familiar?? Stay tune then to find out more…From Pragin Mall, if go straight and you will find the way to Jelutong Express Highway. Before the traffic lights, pls turn to your left into Jalan Carnavon. The 1st KopiTiam is the shop we are looking for…The most significant dish was this Char Hor Fun. Hor Fun is a type of noodle where they came from the same family as Kway Teow. Kway Teow was the little sister as they were slimmer and Hor Fun is eventually the big sister as they are more bulky and thicker….hahaha my version of Kway Teow and Hor Fun

So much of the crap…

Firstly, the Hor Fun was sliced and stir fried in the hot wok with some soy sauce and dark soy sauce for some coloring purpose. Then they cooked the gravy with some chicken stock. They even add some prawns, fish cake, some green vegetables and some fish meat. They thicken the gravy with some beaten egg and some corn flour. And here goes….for only RM3.7 per pax…Pls do not forget this little gorgeous as well. This is the Loh Mee.This dish was cooked instantly using yellow noodles. These noodles were stir fried just like the way you prepared the Hokkien Char. They add some fish cakes, fish meat, prawn and some sliced cabbage. In the end these dish were thicken with some corn flour and garnished with some fried shallots. The special of this was they splashed in lots of vinegar…it taste like shark fin soup we savor from the famous restaurant…but with only RM3.7…LOLThis is called Singapore Bihun…not the Bihun was import from Singapore…silly…
This vermicelli was stir fried with some tomato paste. The add lots of shredded carrots, cabbage, bean sprouts, sliced onions, chicken bits and an eggo. They dress up the dish with some sliced lettuce and a piece of lime. Goood!! RM3.7 as well.

If you want something to flame up the night, you may opt to this Hokkien Mee. From Jelutong express highway, turn to the right as in the map from the traffic light. You should be able to spot this stall on your right by the roadside.Hokkien mee is another regular streets food of Penang. But not every stall served luscious Hokkien mee. Not at all!! The soup base was cooked with lots of the shell of the peeled prawns. Lastly, they even add chili oil in order to add up the tang within. This dish is normally served with noodles like yellow noodles, ‘Maggi Mee’ or Bihun. Other ingredients accompany the mee were some cuttlefish, some kangkong, some liver and fish balls. If you love spicy, remember to ask for ‘tambah Cili’!!We called this Koay Kak, (steamed rice flour and cut into cubes). Koay kak will be stir fried with some taugeh, some Chinese pickles (Choy Poh), chives as well as an egg. This dish is very tempted and it agitates the appetite, thanks to the flavor and the ‘koay’ itself. Uncle smashed the ‘Koay kak’ in bits and this explained why we love it so muchhh!!

In order to get there, go straight to the Jalan Burmah when you reached the Giant in Burmah Rd, after the traffic road, go straight and you will be able to locate the Union primary school on your left. The Koay kak stall is just in front of the school. A plate of this with egg will cost about RM3.When all those beauties still can’t excite you enough, let’s scroll down for some supper then…

From Penang Road, turn into Jalan Chulia and go straight. You will pass a lane named Love Lane and you are almost there. There’s an Aunty selling Apom in her stall. Only 30cents each.heHere's Ah B helping me to be the spy....Apom were the dessert originated by the Indians. They used some mixture of rice flour, self-rising flour, some coconut milk. They poured the mixture into this small wok. When it turned into golden-brown, aunty will ladle up the Apom and folded them quickly before it hardens. Tong yuen was another superb which must not be forgotten. Made of glutinous rice flour and the filings made of crushed peanut paste, it comes perfectly with the soya milk as the soup. They have other soup base as well, like red bean soup and ginger soup. But soy milk is my BEST buddy!!Look what’s inside…..Wowowhhhhh...the yumyum peanut paste....You can find this stall just opposite the New Lane Kopitiam at Macalister Rd.
Trust me, you will find it if you found the New Lane Kopitiam …. LOL

My favorite supper?? How could I ever forget a bowl of dessert as I crave for sweet foodies…. From Gelugor, go straight when you reached the post office of Jelutong. Take the 2nd turning to the left after the Post Office. You will find these varieties of dessert in this stall of your left.B, you just gotto stop showing up..this is suppose to be the a secret....And this is my favorite among ALL!! The peanut soupThese peanuts were peeled and washed and boiled till tender with some sugar and water and pandan leaves. The peanut need to be boiled till soft and tender… Yummy...Only RM1 for each bowls…

Remember the post office that you passed by just now?? Well, you may go back to there as you can find the Burger a.k.a what we called Burger Ramlee. This burger is definitely could not match up to with those McD’s burgers...and yet they have their own zest and exclusivity!!The buns were sliced and slightly fried till golden brown. Then he fried the meat with some butter and dash with some Lea and Perrins sauce and pepper to go. When the meat is ready, they will put an egg and spread in wide. Next, he will put that piece of cooked meat on top of the egg and splash with more Lea and Perrins sauce and some black pepper sauce as well. Then he will put some coleslaw before he wrapped up the meat with the eggo. Before he puts on the meat on the bun, he put some potato salad on the bun and garnished with some lettuce, tomato and some ketchup and cili sauce…. ALL OF THIS ONLY FOR RM4!!

And now you should knew why Penang was named as Food of Paradise...LOL
So much of my lovely darlings, which I wish I could visit them from dawn till dusk. As I always said, too many food, too little time…
And when your belly is full, and it is time to dooze off… and let’s continued our ‘affair’ with my darlings again… in my dream..Baby…

Well, sleep tight and you will definitely sleep soundlessly when your tummy is full…and….ZzzzZzzz….and…..ZZZZzzzzZZzZ….andd…….
